P03: Essay Review - Heidegger's Thinking of Architecture

Relationship between Man and God in the context of Dwelling.
In Heidegger's philosophy, he used Greek temple as example where he said that; a building, a Greek temple, portrays nothing. It simply stands there in the middle of the rock-cleft valley. The building encloses the figure of the god and in this concealment lets it stand out into the holy precinct through the open portico. By means of the temple, the god is present in the temple. It is the temple work that first fits together and at the same time gathers around itself the unity of those paths and relations in which birth and death, disaster and blessing, victory and disgrace, endurance and decline acquire the shape of destiny for human beings. This leads to the points of 'the temple makes the god present', 'temple fits together what shapes the destiny of human being' and 'the temple makes all the things of earth visible'. As a Christian, i do believe that church is a place where people believe God is present within it. And by believing God's presence, God is exist and even visible in action in our daily life where He is always with us. We believe that by praising God, we will live eternity in our spirit. This 'God-feeling mood' is actually affected by the architecture of the dwelling of God where we often see, the existence of Gods' statues in most of the temples and churches. By entering the space with God's existence, we believe that we can communicate with God.

Relationship of Man and Nature.
According to Heidegger's philosophy, there is the concept of fourfold in the world; Earth, Sky, Mortal, Divinities. He said, earth is the building bearer, sky is sun path, mortals are human beings and divinities are messengers of God. Each of the four is what it is because it 'mirrors' the others. It is further explained as man's stay between earth and sky, between birth and death, between joy and pain, between word and work and that is' multivarious between' the world. As we can see from the fourfold of world, it is understand that Heidegger is trying to explain that mortals are closely related to earth, sky and divinities. From my understanding, human beings created temple for God. Through temple, we can see the links between the temple and sky and earth which actually bring back to human that we can connect with God.

Place and Space
Heidegger uses bridge (building) which discloses more comprehensive properties of the surroundings. In my opinion, man is linked with nature and vise-verse. When a bridge is built, it not only connect one place to another but it also make the surroundings explored by man. Thus, through the bridge, man not only travel from place to place but also to discover the surrounding within the space, space within space. It is understand that, if there is a space, there will be a place; if there is a place, there will be a place. It shares the same concept of 'if there is an egg, there will be a chicken, if there is a chicken, there will be an egg'. We can't determine whether place is within space or space within place because they are both equal in terms of existence.

Dwellings
Then, Heidegger said that man dwells between work and word. The word opens up the world and the work gives the world presence. Obviously, word is language. By using language, we give the thingness of the thing. We recognize a temple as a temple because we use language to describe and to communicate. By using language, the world is open because we speak words. Words of praising to God open the world that link between human and God. In further, by using work, we make the world presence. It is understand that, by using work, we make the world (temple) exists and we can use the words to open the world, to speak with God. When we use work to make world present, God present. God dwells in our work.

Language
Language, by naming beings for the first time, first brings beings to word and to appearance. When things are named for the first time, they are recognized as what they are. That linked back to the dwellings of God when we speak words, a world is opened and thus, language keeps the world. Man dwells in language because when he listens, he responds and the world is opened.

As conclusion, Heidegger is trying to express that the fourfold of world; earth, sky, mortals and divinities are linked. There are relationship between the fourfold that we as mortals are actually depending on them. Language is used, to open and to keep the world while work is to make the world present. God dwells in our work and we used word to keep the world. Bridge not only connect the place to place but also to explore the space, the surrounding. Human create building, building brings human back to nature where space is discovered; this shows the relationship between man and nature. Overall, the fourfold of world is closely linked and each of them is dependent on each other.

The church im attending is actually an adaptive reuse example. It was a cinema during the older time but it was renovated into a church. Although the exterior and interior of the building doesn't look like a church but the atmosphere created inside using artificial lighting and the environment of interaction between human and God's dwelling giving a feeling of God's existence. In my perception of the building, the use of lighting and poster on the stage gives a feeling of 'shine from God upon the building and the people within it'. It is my first impression of the building. In this building, i can feel that God is existing, around us and we can actually communicate with Him. With the feeling of God's existence, warmness can be felt.

P03: Essay Review - The Concept of Place

The first point of the essay is about the argument between 'the place' which defined as 'stable places' in the past and 'mobile life' in the future. The idea of 'mobile life' which replace the stable places by Utopian projects stated that the New Babylon emphasized on in-determination, mobility and flexibility. This statement is supported by Dutch Utopian which predict that in New Babylon, everyone will always be traveling, they will not feel the need to return to origin place where it will undergone transformation all the time.
However, this statement is objected by American Urbanist who said that the essence of city is not places but 'interaction' where a good relationship between human and environment will lead to sense of emotional security.
At this point, i do agree with the latter which stressed on the relationship between human and environment (stable places). In mobile life, people tend to travel all the time. As an result, they lack of contact, both physically and emotionally. According to the studies of architectural theorist, Christopher Alexander, lack of contact will eventually leads to mental disorder, self-centredness and schizophrenia.

The second point of the essay is about 'Existential Space' and how the existential space is giving effects on human beings in daily life. As for a child, he will look for the missing object where it was seen the last time and learn to differentiate mobile objects and stable object and thus, using the latter as point of reference. This implied that the child knows how to recognize which is also part of 'conservation' where the child gradually construct the image of a structured world, in which the notion of space.
By the concept of existential space, the structure remains as center. For example, people thought of their home as the center point when asked to describe or talk about their environment because home is the origin place where one departs.
German philosopher, Otto Friedrich Bollnow stated that, the concept of space is connected with human actions. I totally agreed with this statement. He further said that space is conquered through man's action. The concept of space is divided into two meaning; 'place of action' and 'point of departure'. As i mentioned earlier, the child who remembered his home as center is an example of 'point of departure' while 'place of action' is the journey from home to school.
The author further explain about our possibilities of action based on horizontal and vertical planes which generated by our movements. The double movement of departure and return reflects a differentiation of space in two zones; a smaller internal and a surrounding external. Small internal zone is the intimate world of house and home while the surrounding external zone is the outside world where man departs and from where he returns. The existential space of the individual is determined by the interaction between human and environment which i think it is true. We need to understand and adapt the environment which is 'given' to us from the day we are born. That is how 'existential space' is developed step by step as a function of experience, experiencing life.
While adapting the environment, it doesn't mean that we are bounded. The interaction between human and environment however, comprises 'freedom' where we may shape it according to our needs.

The third point of the essay is 'Architectural Space' where if the structure does not permit the development of satisfactory existential space, man himself has to modify the environment. From the smallest changes we can make; moving pieces of furniture to the big projects where architects and planners are involved. Before the environment is 'concretize', natural elements may satisfy our need by developing them further. As we can see from historical studies on dwellings, the reasons for settlement are not an accident. By understanding the place and space, human choose certain sites for their dwellings. Therefore, Genius Loci of the site is appreciated through interaction between human and landscape. I agreed with this as i believe; nature always does the best job in providing a comfortable environment for human.
When there is a building, it creates the relationship between interior and exterior space where often, gate used to distinguish the 'inside' and 'outside'. The interaction between inside and outside also based on the establishment of direction within the place; lines and surfaces which from the interior continue towards outside or viceversa. However, this architectural style experienced increasing opposition where they can't feel at home in a space without limit. The American, Robert Venturi created contrast and contradiction between interior and exterior where the wall act as point of changes which eventually differentiate the interior and exterior forces of use and space. At this point, i do not agree that in order to feel at home, interior and exterior space need to be in contrast and contradiction between each other. As we can see nowadays, architects tend to create 'open space' between interior and exterior so that we can actually experience the nature surrounding as in, to bring us close to nature. The feel of home, is purely an emotional part and psychological mindset of ourselves but not the environment itself because i do believe that, home is the where the heart is :)
With ideas and suggestions coming from all over the world on how to improve the space quality for both interior and exterior, examples such as; curve wall, dynamic and continuous interior, hierarchical, functionalism, regular repetitions, geometrical organization, etc. are used. I think, the forms and ways of expressing the quality of space are basically developed from the basic shapes of square, circle and triangle. With different method of developing the basic shapes, spatial organizations is introduced. Hence, more and more architectural style to come.

As conclusion, i have talked about the three main points of the essay which are; the concept of place, the existential space and architectural space. I agreed with the statement of interaction between human and environment is needed rather than mobile life which seems to bring human to a more convenient and high-tech world. In order to create existential space, i think, we need to experience life step by step to actually recognize the environment around us either in internal zone or external zone. By interaction with environment, we can adapt to the environment given. Architectural space is where we can make modification to the environment if we are not satisfy with the existing space. However, before we make any changes, we should look into the surrounding and analyze what and how can the environment helps to make our life better. By appreciating Genius Loci of the site, human will eventually getting some good deals from the environment. Besides, i think the reason of differentiating the interior and exterior is based on our own perception of space. I strongly believe that the qualities of interior and exterior space are from our heart and mind. Although the forms and organizations affect, but the interaction between human and environment is the domain.
The concept of place, existential space and architectural space are basically connected, both visually and psychologically. Interaction between human and environment is the main influence where we can see, the way of interacting is giving effects on building form, building site, and even the spaces and it's qualities.

P02: Film Review - Minority Report

Basic Plot:
John Anderton (Tom Cruise) is an officer of 'precrime' team in the year of 2054 where their job is to prevent and stop the crimes from happening by the predictions of three physics. After the prediction shows where and when the crime is going to happen, they travel to the future to stop and catch the criminal before they commit the crime.
Later when he found out that he is the one who is going to commit a crime but he doesn't even know the victims, he decided to find out himself while the 'precrime' team is hunting for him to prevent the crime from happening. Things he did including; changed his eyeballs, hiding from the team. With the help of Agatha, he managed to found out that its a trap set up by Burgress where everything is done by him. Both Leo Crow and Agatha's mother, Ann Lively is murdered by Burgress
When the 'precrime' team found out that Burgress is going to kill John, they managed to reach on time.
John and his wife, Lara reunite after their misunderstanding over the lost of their child. Agatha and the physics live their own life after the incidents.
- The End -

Impressive and Unimpressive about the movie:
The most impressive part is the use of technology to make life easier. For example; John used only his fingers to control the screen. Everything can be done by moving just fingers and yet without direct contact with the screen. Besides, the use of jellyfish-like-creature amazed me. They can trace the existence of human and work for the precrime team.
Otherwise, the most unimpressive part of the movie is the flow of story. It was confusing at first where i couldn't define the purpose of the precrime team as they carry out their job to stop the crime. For me, the overall flowing of story is quite boring where there is no main focus or highlight in the movie. I even fell asleep while watching it!

Relationship between context (architecture/technology and story):
Overall, the technology used is suitable for the story where most of the things done by using technology. It fits the plot well where it shows that in the future, where precrime team exists, they can't work without technology. Therefore, they use it as an equipment to prevent the crimes from happening in the future.
Besides, the use of technology such as cars moving vertically, eye balls scanner, physics reading from the brain shows that the prediction of the future by the author where people are creating technology to make their life easier. That is how the precrime team can be created using the technology.

Intention/message of the movie:
I think, the intention of the movie is to show how dependence of human beings on the technology. Almost everything can be done and even crimes can be predicted and prevented using the technology. But, although it can be predicted, still, there will be minority of them are wrong, as what shown in the movie.
In my opinion, the message that the author trying to express was a success. Human beings depended on the use of technology. Sometimes, there might be wrong. Certain people are just believing in what they see but some, they choose to find out the truth when they know it's not true.

Impact on design thinking:
Yes, i think so. Because of the technology shown in the movie, people tend to imagine how will the future looks like. By imagination, something will be created, either to protect or to destroy. Time traveling machine, people moving around in the air, cars moving vertically, invisible screen are those imagination that the author had for the future. That is why the technology is used in the movie where it happens in year 2054. It will definitely having impact on design thinking.

That's all.

A: My Story

Finally, satisfied with my blog's skin. Been doing this for quite a long time. Just to make it nicer :)

Childhood moments that lead to architecture:
I can still remember, during my primary school days, i used to stared at those small little models of developers in the shopping mall whenever i saw them. They attracted my attention easily as if i spotted a handsome guy. I would just stop and start looking at the models and wondering; how they made this? what materials are they using? And of course, i told myself; one day, i am going to make them on my own.

Reasons of choosing this field:
My interest of staring at small little models eventually leaded me to take the subjects of 'Lukisan Kejuruteraan' and 'Teknologi Kejuruteraan' during my Form 4 and Form 5. By taking these 2 subjects, i made the very first model in my life in the national competition. Although i did not get to win but at least i know i tried my best and i am satisfied. This simple thought of making models on my own leads me to Architecture where i can design exactly what i want and make it in reality.

The best and worst experiences studying architecture:
hahahaha. I love the friends. I love the group work. I enjoy the moment of doing work together as a team where we can have fun and lots of talk. But with one condition; only if you got nice and willing-to-work friends in your team. Or else, i am sure you hate group work. The best part of architecture is; we get to go for study trip which basically we do not care much about the work given but to enjoy the best during the trip :D and the worst part is; WE only went once for study trip during the foundation year. WE have not been to study trip since then. What a sad story :(

The best and worst habits throughout my studies:
To be honest, the best habit that i have after analyzing myself, is I THINK, i am pretty fast in doing work. hahahaha. At least, fast in drafting :D
The worst habit would be the procrastination that rooted in me.
Because of my worst habit, i think i am losing my best habit :(
Have been telling myself not to procrastinate but, sigh~ things wont always happen according to plan.

My inspiration of keeping me going on:
Besides my father and family that supporting me all this while, i am moved by my mother. She is the one who told me not to give up. She is the one whom i desperately want to show my result to. Although she is not with me anymore, but i know she is still watching me, doing every single thing in my life.
My dream; of building not only houses, but home. House is not a home if there's no love. I have always wanted to build houses where people create their home in it. A home with love, a home that unite everyone in their life.
